What conditions do chiropractors treat?
At Southern Spine Chiropractic, our chiropractors are equipped to care for individuals of all ages, across a spectrum of health concerns. They are renowned for their proficiency in alleviating back pain, neck pain, and headaches with expertly performed chiropractic adjustments. Our chiropractors also treat a wide array of injuries and disorders affecting the musculoskeletal system, encompassing muscles, ligaments, and joints. Conditions that may impact the nervous system, potentially leading to referred pain and dysfunction beyond the initial area of discomfort, are also within their realm of expertise. Beyond hands-on care, our team provides personalized guidance on diet, nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle choices, aiming to foster a holistic approach to health and well-being.
Is chiropractic treatment safe?
At Southern Spine Chiropractic, we uphold chiropractic care as a premier, non-pharmacological, and non-invasive treatment option for neuromusculoskeletal issues. Renowned for its commendable safety profile, chiropractic interventions stand as a testament to safe healthcare. While no health treatment is devoid of all risk, adverse effects from chiropractic are exceptionally rare and usually minor. Many of our patients experience immediate relief, though some may notice mild discomfort akin to post-exercise soreness, typically dissipating within a day.
Targeted cervical manipulation is a cornerstone of our practice for addressing neck pain and certain headache types. This precise technique enhances neck joint mobility, eases muscle spasms, and mitigates stress, thereby alleviating discomfort. When performed by our highly trained chiropractors, a cervical adjustment is extraordinarily safe.
There have been rare instances linking high-velocity neck manipulations to a specific kind of stroke, but research suggests these events are most likely spontaneous in individuals with pre-existing arterial conditions. Such arterial issues have been correlated with routine actions like looking back while driving or simple neck movements during daily activities. It’s vital to understand that seeking care due to neck pain or headaches is not indicative of the cause of arterial injuries. The probability of such incidents occurring in connection with chiropractic neck adjustments is extremely low, mirroring that within the general populace.
We encourage open communication about symptoms when you visit Southern Spine Chiropractic. This ensures the delivery of the safest, most effective treatment, which may include a referral to another healthcare provider if necessary.
It’s crucial to contextualize the safety of chiropractic care against other treatment modalities for comparable conditions. Spinal manipulations carry a risk profile that is notably more favorable than that of common medical interventions, such as NSAIDs and prescription painkillers, which have higher rates of serious complications.
Additionally, with growing concerns over the opioid crisis—where misuse of prescription pain medication has become a leading cause of accidental death—it’s important to recognize the value of safer alternatives like chiropractic care. Our chiropractors are extensively educated to identify and appropriately manage or refer patients with special risks, ensuring everyone receives the highest standard of care suited to their unique health needs.
Does chiropractic treatment require a referral from an MD?
At Southern Spine Chiropractic, we welcome you to directly schedule your appointment without the need for a referral. While some insurance policies may have specific requirements, our friendly staff is here to assist you with any questions. We encourage you to reach out to your insurance provider or speak with your employer’s HR department to clarify your plan’s details. Our doors are open for you to call and book your chiropractic session at your convenience.
Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children?
At Southern Spine Chiropractic, we recognize that active children can often encounter falls and injuries through daily play and sports, leading to various discomforts like back or neck pain. Our chiropractic services are tailored to meet the unique needs of our younger patients, ensuring that the care provided is not only effective but also exceptionally gentle to accommodate their growing bodies.
Do insurance plans cover chiropractic?
At Southern Spine Chiropractic, we believe that access to quality chiropractic care is essential. That’s why we’re pleased to announce that our services are covered under a wide range of health insurance policies, including major medical plans, workers’ compensation, Medicare, and select Medicaid plans. Additionally, our care extends to those who serve our country, with coverage for active-duty military personnel at over 60 military bases, and for veterans at numerous VA medical facilities.
What type of education and training do chiropractors have?
At Southern Spine Chiropractic, we pride ourselves on the exceptional educational background of our healthcare providers. Dr. Brandon Burkley and Dr. Richard Laviano, our esteemed chiropractic physicians, exemplify the rigorous academic and professional journey required to excel in this field. Prior to their chiropractic education, both doctors completed nearly four years of pre-medical undergraduate studies, delving deep into subjects like biology, chemistry, physics, and psychology, complemented by intensive laboratory work.
Once they embarked on their chiropractic education, Dr. Burkley and Dr. Laviano underwent four to five years of advanced professional study. Their comprehensive education encompassed orthopedics, neurology, human anatomy, physiology, clinical diagnosis, including laboratory testing and diagnostic imaging, as well as nutrition, exercise, and rehabilitation strategies. A cornerstone of their training was mastering the art and science of chiropractic adjustments and manipulation techniques, ensuring precision and care in their practice.
The extensive curriculum, which encompasses a minimum of 4,200 hours in the classroom, lab, and clinical settings, is rigorous and in-depth, approved by the Council on Chiropractic Education and recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. This ensures that our doctors are not just skilled practitioners but also authorities in the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. At Southern Spine Chiropractic, Dr. Burkley and Dr. Laviano bring this wealth of knowledge and skill to each patient, offering a level of chiropractic care that is both scientifically grounded and meticulously honed through years of dedicated training.
